I think Stuey would have called with any Ace in that spot regardless of the inside straight draw.

with the aggressiveness that Unger typically showed, this hand played itself. Unger was only about 57% to actually lose the hand when the money went in. He had about 35% equity.

Re: Stu Ungar Suck-Out? 1997 WSOP Final Hand
regardless he said he had a vision of winning the series with a wheel and then here comes the perfect flop. I think because he was known as the ultimate gambler even if he is shown the A8 he calls and trusts his "vision" of the wheel.

i don't doubt this.. and if he did have a vision of winning it with a wheel i guess this was how to play it ;-)

Re: Stu Ungar Suck-Out? 1997 WSOP Final Hand
Notice also that after the turn card paired the board, 32 of the remaining 44 cards in the deck would have given Ungar at least a split of the pot.
So although he was an underdog on the flop, he'd have to have got pretty unlucky to have lost the hand after the turn came down. |

Re: Stu Ungar Suck-Out? 1997 WSOP Final Hand
I dont think Stu wouldve layed it down without the inside straight draw. The Inside straight draw was the reason he re-raised big on a semibluffed. Maybe w/o the draw he wouldve only raise 100k or so to find out were he was at. But Stu was a master reader and felt weakness from his opponent.
