Who will it be in 2008?
Obviously Hillary & someone (maybe Obama; perhaps her hubby?) on the left.
Who do the Republicans put up? A Giuliani and JC Watts ticket? I don't think Powell will run but he would be a great choice. |

None of the above, I'm sure.

Re: Who will it be in 2008?
I think having Giuliani might well alienate many of the social conservative crowd. Although the prospect of having one of the Clintonistas in the Oval Office might well nullify that.

Re: Who will it be in 2008?
They will rewrite the constitution so Bush will be President. After all 8 years is not long enough for him to completely run the country into the ground.
I don't believe it will be Powell, for one reason. The south. I have a hard time believing the south would actually allow a black person to be elected. I imagine it will be Guiliani so they can continue riding the 9/11 train and the fear plane through the next decade. Melch |

I don't think we're as backwards down here as you think. I mean Colin Powell is hardly even black Also he's a military man, and in the South we like ass kickers.

Re: Who will it be in 2008?
Bush openly discussed how he would put Powell in his cabinet before the 2000 election, and still won the cotton states pretty easily. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, but I don't think the South would react in such a manor.

Melch [/ QUOTE ] So, by this logic, the Democratic party is racist for not nominating Jesse Jackson in the past and Al Sharpton this year. How do so many congressmen/women and mayors who are black get elected in the south? This continuing mantra that the south is the only bastion of racism in America is utterly astounding. The north is just as, if not more so, racist as the south. The left coast and northeast elitism knows no bounds. |

Re: Who will it be in 2008?
The South won't go for Powell - not because he is black - but because is not right about any of the issues that are important to most southerners ...... he is wrong on affirmative action and abortion for instance ....... he is not really a conservative.

Re: Who will it be in 2008?
I'm still in the backwards ass south. I honestly do believe they would have a hard time accepting a black president. When Bobby Jendel(an Indian) ran for Governer of our state, race became such an issue that it caused many republicans to cross parties and vote for Blanco. They believed that a foriegner in office would be a bad thing, even though Bobby was born in Louisiana.

Re: Who will it be in 2008?
Melch,
Wasn't that election really close? I seem to remember that it was a very tight race. Racism certainly still exists in the south, for BOTH sides. However, I am optimistic that the mindset is changing for the better. As a born and raised southerner, in a somewhat racist climate, I would have no problem voting for another race that shared my views on a few key issues. |
