Jacked Up?
Mirage 20-40. Good mix of locals and unknowns. I am UTG with black jacks and raise. Unknown who has just been in the game for 15 minutes calls quickly. I know nothing about his play. Folded to bb who also calls.
Flop is 9c, 9s, 5c. BB checks, I bet am raised (bb folds) and I 3 bet. Opponent makes it 4 bets and I call. Turn is a red 7 - I check/call. River, Qd. I check/fold. |

Re: Jacked Up?
If you check/call the turn you can't fold the river. These plays are completely inconsistent and don't make sense in terms of pot odds or reads.

Re: Jacked Up?
Regarding the flop, why not cap? Scared of the 9? If so, why not fold the turn?
And why call the turn and check/fold the river? You put him on Q? IF you put him on a 9 or Q, you made some mistakes. If not, then you still made mistakes. Unknown could be holding a flush draw and although the Q might've helped his hand (AQc or the like), a call is necessary since there are enough BB's in there to justify a call for future plays. |

Re: Jacked Up?
If you're going to fold I'd fold the turn and not the river... but I wouldn't fold. I'd call down and expect to be shown trips.

Re: Jacked Up?
There's pretty much zero chance that I wouldn't see a showdown against an unknown opponent. What makes the Qd a scary card?

Re: Jacked Up?
Everyone likes to make a big deal about how horrible these kinds of folds are, but it really isn't all that bad. Once the flop is capped a calculation of your effective odds tells you that it's going to cost you about 2.5 more BB's to show down-- which means you're going to need to be good on the river about 25% of the time. Will you be good this often? Yeah, I think so-- and because of that I wouldn't fold. But if it's a mistake it's not a real big one.
The real problem comes from calling the turn if you're planning on mucking on the river. If you think you're beat, fold on the turn. If you call here you just have to show down, unless you 'know' somehow that your opponent wouldn't metamorphasize on the river from a semi-bluffer into a total bluffer. |

Re: Jacked Up?
Babe,
I love you and all, but you've gotta call here. Hands like this are why the games in Vegas are good. |
