For most of the late 1980s and 1990s, 5th Generation Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou was the world's best cinematic storyteller. Anyone who has seen Raise the Red Lantern, To Live, and Ju Dou was well aware.

Zhang was married to his leading lady, Gong Li, who starred in all of his films up through Shanghai Triad, and was barely out of her teens when she met him. Gong dumped Zhang and ran off with a businessman. Zhang made a movie without Gong called Keep Cool that nobody has ever seen because it failed to get domestic distribution.

Then, in 1999, Zhang cast an unknown 19 year-old to star in his comeback drama The Road Home. She was absolutely phenomenal in the role. His friend, Taiwanese-born Ang Lee, was casting a breakthrough martial arts epic at the time, and called him in desperate search of a young girl to star opposite Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat. Zhang did not hesitate to recommend his newfound star, Zhang Ziyi.

As history repeats itself, Zhang Yimou took up with Zhang Ziyi off-screen as well. The girl got the part in Crouching Tiger, and exploded into worldwide fame. Zhang Yimou jumped on the martial arts bandwagon after that, leaving behind the elegant dramas he had perfected, after two not-so-stellar films "Not One Less" and "Happy Times" (both of which I think are quite good), and made two big wire-fu extravaganzas back-to-back: Hero and House of Flying Daggers, both starring his new lovely muse. The girl, recognizing her appeal overseas, Americanized her name by putting the surname last, re-christening herself Ziyi Zhang, and is now going to appear in Memoirs of a Geisha, from the director of Oscar-winning Chicago. Speaking English all the while.

Meanwhile, Zhang Yimou's ex continues to flourish -- Gong Li took a role in Wong Kar Wai's 2046 and Eros (and will even be in Michael Mann's remake of his own "Miami Vice"), and to bring everything totally full circle, is appearing opposite Ziyi in Memoirs.

Great post, thanks for the info.

Had no idea Mann was redoing his Miami Vice.

Good book, it'll be interesting to see it as a movie. Being able to masturbate to zhang ziyi while i'm watching it is a nice bonus.
