After the fact... since he bet the river with 55 when the straight card hit.. he's not all that straightforward or brilliant. Before the fact... I think the call is right... I'm not sure about your game, but 60-70% of the time in the games I play, that river bet is 10j. The way I see it, 30-40% of the time you call you win the pot.. same 30-40% you raise you win the pot + 1 extra bet if he calls.. If we assume 60-70% is average, (it may be higher in many games) kindergarten tells us that raising the river is -EV.
