Re: College OT Strategy
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] When they say they deferred, they meant they'd take the ball second. When you defer the opening coin toss, you just take the ball in the second half, so the same terminology in overtime means that you play offense second. [/ QUOTE ] Are you sure? I think "defer" means you PICK second. So in regulation, if I defer, it means you pick for the first half (and almost certainly take the ball) and I pick for the second (and almost certainly take the ball). Oklahoma kicked off to start both halves once this year. [/ QUOTE ] Well, I'd never seen anyone choose defense, but yeah, technically, you're right. |

[/ QUOTE ] Ordinarilly the team that wins the toss gets first choice to start the game, and the team that looses the toss gets first choice to start the second half. When the team that wins the toss defers, that means that they are taking first choice for the second half, and the othe team gets first choice to start the game. In overtime, there is no defering (since there is no later choice to defer to). The team that wins the toss eithere chooses offence, defence, play at the north, or play at the south. In LSU v Alabama, LSU won the toss, and chose to play defence (which the winner of the toss almost always does). Alamaba then chose the side to play at. |
