Re: JQs on the flop.
[ QUOTE ]
Make it two bets [/ QUOTE ] This is what I was thinking. I called but after the hand I was wondering if a raise would be best. Then I checked the quiz section in SSH and Ed gives a similiar example on pages 271-272 with the exception being that you have the button and are raising not just to free up your outs but to get a possible free card. Here though there are still players left to act behind so I don't know if a raise has quite the same value in this case. |

Re: JQs on the flop.
I think you gain more value with a call in this small pot. There are still two to act behind you, and you don't know what their possible holdings are on a somewhat drawy board. If you do hit one of your overcards, you make them face two cold on the turn.

Make it two bets [/ QUOTE ] I can understand this in a larger pot, but I don't get it in this small pot. How much do you think this increases our winning chances? |

Re: JQs on the flop.
If it's a lag, I peel. There is a lot of value that can be gained when we raise his turn or river bets. If it's a TAG or more passive player, I kind of like a raise here, as we gain a nice shot at a free card.

Raise. You've got 10 outs plus a backdoor flush draw. 7 of the outs are clean (the non-heart ones). 3 of them are good for the nut straight (the non-heart 9s). For me it is a clear raise situation. It builds the pot a bit and may buy you a free card on the turn if a blank hits. BB could have anything here including a flush or straight draw. If the flop missed SB completely, he's folding anyways, if it hit him a little and he folds then your overcards may be that much better if BB is on a draw. If SB cold calls or 3-bets, look out, especially if the BB raises again. If the SB folds and the BB 3-bets, cap?? I'm a beginner so I am looking for comments as well on my thought processes. Edit: oops I missed the two players behind you . Taking them into account makes the raise less attractive because the overcards are less good?? Still I raise or fold depending on how I see the likelyhood of getting a fold or two behind me. If I can get one or two folds I would be inclined to raise, if not fold. Am I making any sense at all? |

Re: JQs on the flop.
I raise to knockout the SB and for the free card.
EDIT: Forgot about button and to take into account the small pot size. not so sure now. |

Re: JQs on the flop.
:grunching
You have about 8.5 outs (3 for overcards, 1.5 backdoor flush, 4 gutshot straight) so you need 1 in 5.5 to continue. You get 1 in 6 so you're not folding. A raise may force out other queens and jacks and keep your overcard outs clean and could possibly give you a free card on the turn. Based on that i think raising is better than calling. |

Re: JQs on the flop.
I was inclined to say raise at first looking at this situtions but this is a hard one for me to decide. I would give 3 outs for the straight as tthe 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] would give a flush. Also the overcards can be dominated also so 2-3 outs for them and BDFD of 1.5 so a total of 6.5 - 7.5 out total. I wouldn't feel safe to raising at this point so I would just call and see what comes on the turn then raise if I hit.

Re: JQs on the flop.
I was leaning toward call, but I think the raisers are right. With a raise you can fold some of those behind you. You're taking next to act from 7:1 to 4:1 which may help fold single overcards and small PPs. So is this one of those "raise or fold" moments?
Of course, you know how the table is running, too. If you have any amount of confidence that it's going to get re-raised behind you (the pf action doesn't indicate it but you'd know better than us) then I think that might cause you to consider folding. |
