Re: I need help understanding this mindset
Which would you rather have:
(a) Every poor person in New Orleans rises up and goes to every store in the city and steals everything and takes it back to their respective cribs ... or (b) Hurricane Katrina ----- There were a few looters. Because of all the pollution in New Orleans, no one in the city will be able to draw potable water for at least a year (if they ever go back). Hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes. Tens of thousands died. Hurricane Katrina was probably the worst disaster since we dropped atomic bombs on Japan. Shut the hell up about the looters. |

Celine Dion
I agree with Newfant - Celine was saying that looting should be on the bottom of the list of things to worry about right now.
And she was speaking from emotion. She is an entertainer, not a politician. She does not represent all liberals. Are those explanations satisfactory or are you a complete idiot? And BTW, she's not French, she's French Canadian. |

Re: I need help understanding this mindset
[ QUOTE ]
I don't hold it against the people in NO if they are stealing stuff. Most of them just want to sell the plasma tv's for money to survive. It's not like they're going to take the TV home and plug it into their non-existent electric supply. Besides, Wal-Mart has insurance anyway. [/ QUOTE ] Not to nit-pick, but let's think this through... You said, "They probably want to sell [the stuff they steal] for money to survive". Now, work with me here... 1) People were told to leave town prior to the storm hitting. 2) The constant argument for why these people either decided not to go or to some, just couldn't go, is because they were poor. Doesn't it then stand to logic that a very, very large majority of people still there, stealing stuff or not, are poor? Now, precisely who are they going to sell this stuff to? If anybody had the money to be buying the TV's and all the Nikes and football jerseys the people are stealing, they could have bought a bus ticket and gotten the hell out of Dodge. There is simply no excusing those who have taken advantage of this tragedy as a cover for being simple criminals. And there is no way a logical person can sympathize with those people's actions. Or, I could come to your house and steal your stuff. I don't have a very big TV, and I could always use a new computer. You've got insurance, don't you? |

Re: I need help understanding this mindset
I'm sorry, I can't help myself. I must respond to this even though it is entirely tangential:
[ QUOTE ] Hurricane Katrina was probably the worst disaster since we dropped atomic bombs on Japan. [/ QUOTE ] Do they teach kids ANYTHING in school these days? 1. A-bombs were not a disaster. They were a man-made atrocity. 2. We had a FREAKING tsunami kill 300,000 people just a few months ago! 3. If you ARE going to include man-made atrocities, then the a-bombs would barely make the top ten for just the 1940's, much less everything that came after. natedogg |

Re: I need help understanding this mindset
[ QUOTE ]
"Oh, they're stealing 20 pair of jeans or they're stealing television sets. Who cares? They're not going to go too far with it. Maybe those people are so poor, some of the people who do that they're so poor they've never touched anything in their lives. Let them touch those things for once," [/ QUOTE ] Regardless of one's position on looting, this is condescending as hell. These are Americans, not sudanese refugees. Even the poorest people here have TVs and blue jeans. "Let them touch these things"? They weren't stealing Faberge Eggs. |

Re: I need help understanding this mindset
Wether society should expend the resources to stop it is an entirely different matter then wether the act of looting itself is right/wrong and what it says about our society.

Who cares what she thinks? Her opinion doesn't represent any specific group outside of herself. She is just talking.
