In depth 5/10 question
Playing 5/10 at the casino the other day and I think I misplayed a hand in a manner that allowed another player to get a read on me. Here is the scenario..
Staring at JJ in EMP with one limper before me on a tight but very aggressive raising table. I Raise to 10. Another player immediately behind me who has proven to be very loose at the time reraises me. Everyone else folds back to me. My question now is do I cap the raise. I believe that the player has reraised me merely for information and may or may not be sitting on a good hand. He is waiting for me to cap the raise, and thus put me on AA, KK, AK, etc or just merely call his reraise, thus putting me on a lesser pocket pair. I decide just to call the bet and see what happens, although I know this will cause the loose player to bet on any high card which appears on the flop. Sure enough, an A hits on the flop. Now, should I play my jacks with aggression in early position to him or just check to him and call or fold? This player is very capable of raising my flop bet and any others to follow with nothing. What should be my move here? Any ideas or suggestions would help. |

Whatever you do, don't fold.

Re: In depth 5/10 question
I don't see why check/calling the whole way is a bad play against this type of player. You immediately want a cheap showdown. Since you said he will raise with anything, you will be paying more bets than you need to by betting out the flop. Get to the showdown as cheap as you can to see if he has an A or not. But, make sure your read is solid when making this play.

Re: In depth 5/10 question
What Haupt said. If he checks through on the flop, check or bet depends on his likelyhood of betting when checked to twice.

How I ended up playing the hand
Good insight, I actually decided since he had better position that my play would be to check and call down, unless another J hit obviously.
On the flop of Ace, rag, rag I checked, he bet, and I called Turn came a K. Now any of his Ax or Kx hands can beat mine. I checked and he bet again but this time I decided to fold to the second overcard. Now even though he had me pegged on a lower pocket pair and would have bet regardless I just couldn't justify two more 10 dollar calls here in a pot where I was only getting 6.5:1 odds on the turn. Do you think I would have been justified in calling this turn and the river regardless of what hit? |

Re: How I ended up playing the hand
First question: Is he capable of betting the river with Q high or 66 after you check/call the turn? If he'll only follow through with an ace or king, you can safely fold the river.
Second question: If he will also bluff the river, combining the turn and river, you're getting about 3.75:1 to see a showdown. Will you be good 20%+ of the time? |

Re: How I ended up playing the hand
I'm not going to fold here. I would look at this hand, at the very least, as an insured opportunity to see what his 3-betting standards might be.
Also worth thinking about is if you thought you were likely good when the A hit, the K shouldn't change very much - not unless he's 3-betting with KQ, which is a very narrow band of hands to put him on atm. - Jim |
