The main reason they don't last long is because they are typically poorly kept. Pet stores keep them in little cups because it is expensive to house them properly and so that customers are more likely to buy them on impulse. Customers take the poor things home thinking they can thrive in that little cup and wonder why their beloved fishy always looks sick and dies within 3-6 months.

A properly cared for Betta in a properly sized home can easily live 3-5 years. Same deal with goldfish and other types of fish who are incorrectly perceived as pets with short lifespans.

I hear ya on the up keep of fish. I have about 250 gallons of fish tanks going right now. I hate seeing the Beta's in the small potted plant vase. They should atleast get a 10 gallon tank with a small filter.

I had a Beta for 2 years when I lived in New Orleans. He was named Cassius (a la Cassius Clay) being that he was a fighting fish. We kept him in a fish bowl. We never changed the water, although we would add to it from the Brita as the water level dropped. The bowl itself wasn't that big and we were surprised that it lasted as long as it did. It was still going strong, until I had someone fishsit for me and his roommate's friend killed it (one night when he was wasted, he wondered if fish get drunk). Anyway, they definitely last long enough to be given a name. We used to buy little feeder fish from the store and put them in there with Cassius so he'd get to kick some ass.

I'm rambling. Enjoy the fish.

Alright she has reviewed the list and can't decide between three names. She was thrilled with the number of suggestions and thanks everyone for their input. Again she would like to turn to you for help breaking the tie.
