I thought it was normal, cuz my family did it all the time. It wasn't until last year when I was eating it in front of friends when I found out it was uncommon.

Anyways I'm guessing it is some variant of a dessert from Malaysia where they use corn, because its sweet. It makes perfect sense to me!
