luck in poker
I was reading a book that talks about how you should let your current "luck" influence your play .... meaning that if you have missed your last 5 draws ... you should not go for your 6th because your running cold ...( this is regardless of the fact that you are getting the right odds to call) i think this is bs but id like some opinions

If you flip a coin and it comes up heads five times in a row, is it more or less likely to come up heads on the next flip? |

Re: luck in poker
The only possible way to redeem this otherwise absurd claim is to base it on your table image. If you have missed 5 draws in a row, people may perceive you as bluffing and play more aggressively at you, which would make it more difficult to play weak hands. Other than that, this is an obvious reverse-Monte Carlo fallacy.

To prove this I invite you to play at my table and you will no doubt reap immediate benefits from employing this strategy. PS: I remain convinced that if a fair coin comes up heads five times in a row that it is a near absolute certainty that it will come up heads on the next toss (or was it tails?). |

Actually, I remember reading something akin to this in Supersystem. DB or BB wrote that if they win a big pot, he would always play the next hand within reason. I think the reasoning was a little different though. I think they are trying to get you to build up table image when you are getting a hot streak of cards. Also, assuming you lose, which is probable, it gets some money back to the losers so they can keep paying (i mean, playing) happily. |

Re: luck in poker
I believe the book you refer to may be Small Stakes Holdem by Sklansky; in the chapter "Where the Money Comes From" beginning pg 16.
