TRUE STORY
I was volunteering in South Central, teaching tennis to kids...
One morning, I have my list of kids in my hand, doing roll call - and I'm always entertained by the variety of names in this neighborhood...but one makes me stop short. I ask the child's mother how she pronounces her daughter's name. She looks at me like I'm absolutely crazy and says, "YOUR-EEN." Like, how else would I pronounce it? Only this poor girl's name was spelled, "U-r-i-n-e." |
