I think it is Che who has written about the importance of changing gears over the course of a tournament. Rather than stealing once per orbit, steal twice or three times in a single orbit, and then lay back.

I found that when I started stealing less, I started lasting longer in tournaments, but I was stealing waaaay too much, and didn't know how to get away from a hand.
