I made a stab at it. Got all my chips in 5 times where I was a favourite or 40+% in a three-way pot and lost 4 out of 5. What can you do?

This is the hand that crippled me:

PokerStars (8 handed) converter
Tournament #12552977, Omaha Pot Limit - Level IX (300/600)

Seat 1: SB (4140 in chips)
Seat 2: Hero (4450 in chips)

Preflop: Hero is BB with Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 2[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. SB posts a blind of 300.
6 folds, SB (poster) completes, Hero checks.

Flop: 2[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB bets, Hero raises, SB calls 2340 (All-In).

Turn: 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players, 1 all-in)

SB had: 5 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] K [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 3 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 4 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (a straight, Deuce to Six)

SB collected 8280 from pot

Ks 5s 4d 3d 289 35.24 531 64.76 0 0.00 0.352

If I had won i'd have been in the top 10 with 40 left (top 5 get seats and next 10 get refunds), instead I had $310 and a $300 small blind on the next hand. Even then I was a 52/48 fave and was getting 4 to 1 odds.

Interesting side note: I watched one guy put in 9 rebuys in the first 14 hands before he finally hit some hands and found himself with a big stack. He then added an add-on at the break thus spending $101 in an attempt to beat out 90 people for 5 spots worth $530. He only lasted 5 minutes longer than I did (27th). Does anyone else think this is nuts?

Also, is it accepted add-on wisdom to buy a 1500 add-on when you already have a 15000+ stack? This seems like a total waste to me and yet I see it all the time.

I always take the add-on. A chip is a chip is a chip. no? I'm not a big tourney theorist but it seems like you are at a a fairly big disadvantage if you don't add-on, i guess unless its a turbo where the stacks to blind ratio is already super high and another 1500 isn't going to change much.

I guess if you can get a seat spending 200 on rebuy tourneys then its +ev. BUt ya, I usually set a limit on the number of rebuys I'll do and its less then 10

This logic is severely flawed. Just because the blinds go up faster, doesn't mean the chips are worth less.

But don't tournament chips devaluate as the tournament progresses? In a turbo its already late stage when the add-on comes up. Like I said, I'm a cash game player and have spent zero time thinking about MTTs on a deep level. On a gut level it makes sense to me to always take the add-on. But edumacate me why that is.

Chips devalue as your stack gets larger in relation to the other players.

If anything, add-ons are more valuable when the blinds are larger. If you basically have to go all-in or fold preflop, then stack size is very important, because there is less skill involved. There's less skill because there's only one decision to make: whether or not to move in, and whether or not to call an opponents all-in bet.

Edit: I just busted out in 678th, so I must be a tournament strategy expert.
