Calling a raise on the river
I've just moved up a limit and noticed that a lot of the players there will raise the river if they think that they have the nuts.
Example: Hero has QQ and is in late position. Hero raises driving out all but one other player. Flop: Q,T,9 suits unimportant. I'm thinking that Ive got top trips and there is an unlikely (but not impossible) straight on the board. Villian Checks, Hero bets, Villian Calls Turn: Some small card like a 3. Villian checks, Hero Bets, Villian calls River: 8 Now I'm thinking "Crap any jack beats me and I got screwed because I couldnt properly protect my hand." Villian checks, Hero Bets, Villian Raises, Hero ... Do you call this raise? It seems obvious that villian is representing the made straight. Also, at any limits does a tactic like this start to work as a bluff? I'll post the results later if anyone is interested. Greg |

Re: Calling a raise on the river
Even if he drew out on you, you have to call it down for 1 more BB because the pot is big.

I couldnt properly protect my hand [/ QUOTE ] Not sure you could protect it any better than you did. It isn't the biggest pot in the world, but I'd have to have a pretty strong read on the villain to lay this down to a raise. |

Re: Calling a raise on the river
Unless you have a read that villain is a rock that will only raise you with the nuts, call this for one bet. Sometimes villain will just have a hand like Q8, T8, etc that you beat.

Re: Calling a raise on the river
check/calling the river gets us out of the 'do we call a raise' situation here.

[/ QUOTE ] hmm i guess i ought to pay more attention to the post. i could see an argument for both here, but checking behind does seem like the play i would make. i dont see middle pair calling us here due to the straight possibilities. we have bet every street which sets us up perfectly for a river c/r. |

Re: Calling a raise on the river
Call. Someone might raise this holding JT or QJ expecting to beat TP.

Re: Calling a raise on the river
You mean like representing the NUTS FLUSH on the forth flush card dropping? Clark's Theorm then yes.
Here, I may do it occasionaly if im against a weak tight(Many found at pokerstars). PH. p.s. I think i check behind on this, Its to scary. |

Re: Calling a raise on the river
Well it turns out that villian had J8s all along. He flopped the straight and played it in a very weak way. Oh well.
I called it down. I think that I was correct but I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't a huge leak. I can see the merits of checking behind but I think that that is a slightly weak tight way to play it. I think that erring on the side of aggression with a big hand is the right way to play it. Too bad I didnt pair the board and punish villian for his weak tightness. Greg |
