Folding a flopped set
These numbers aren't exactly right, but should be pretty close.
Blinds are 150/300 UTG (1200.00 in chips) Me (4000.00 in chips) SB (3820.00 in chips) BB (5000.00 in chips) I am on the button with pocket threes. UTG folds, I raise to 450, SB calls, BB folds. Flop is 3d, 7d, Qd. SB goes all in. My read on the small blind is that he's pretty tight, but not a great player. None of the other players are that amazing either, and folding now would by no means cripple me. However, winning the hand would put me in a really good position to win. Do I have the best hand? If I do, do I call hoping my hand holds up, or do I fold and wait for a better spot to put all my money? Thanks for your advice. |

Re: Folding a flopped set
First, if I raise 33 PF at 150/300, I make it at least 600 to go. 150 is too cheap for the BB to limp in, also considering your stack size and your read on him, he may not want to gamble with hands like QT/QJ.
I call putting SB on KQ or Big Diamond. SB most definitely checks a flopped flush here. What buy-in was this SNG? I've played 63 SNGs so I'm still learning --- comment on my comments too. |

Re: Folding a flopped set
If you are saying that the SB had slightly less chips that you before the hand (~180), if you called and lost you would be all but out. I look to fold here and wait until I get my money in the pot 1st. He might have had top pair with a high diamond, perhaps K.

I'd rather play to win that play to place. |

Re: Folding a flopped set
So I likely call here. The only hand that you're really worried about is a higher set - which makes the push allin seem like a reasonable move. Otherwise, you're ahead to everything but a made flush, which he would surely check to you.
The best hand that I could really put him on would be QxAd, at which you're still 3:1 to win and have re-draws if the turn is a D. |

Re: Folding a flopped set
Thanks for the advice guys.
Most of your were right on with your read. I ended up folding, and he showed JJ, one of which being a diamond. One of my flaws is working too hard to get third when I would get more money overall by taking risks and going for first. As for this hand, I felt that I was good enough where I could outplay the rest of these people, and hopefully get first or second. I was reasonably sure I had the best hand, and knew that if I didn't I still had outs, but busting in fourth here was not what I wanted to do. The odds told me to call, but I wanted to wait until I was in a more comfortable spot to put my chips in. Folding still left me with a solid amount of chips that I could work with. That was my thinking, although it may not have been right. I ended up winning the tournament, which doesn't help my "surviving until third" leak. Something I have to work on, I guess. |
