unlike limit, this is varies a ton player to player. there is no "larger than 25% VP$IP is a loser" doctrine like in limit. that said, here are a few rough guidelines (jump in here anyone who's more experienced):
New player, stacks below 70BB: 6max ~25% 10max ~20% Emphasis on playing dominating cards in raised pots and keeping position when possible New player, stacks >70BB: 6max ~28% 10max ~25% Emphasis on keeping position against other big stacks at all times and playing fewer possible trouble hands and more easy-to-play hands. Experienced player (say greater than 20K hands at a level?), short stacks: 6max ~30% 10max ~25% Deep stacks: 6max ~30-50 10max ~25-40 with position being paramount. fim |

This sounds right to me. I am a beginner at 6 max and have ~21% vpip. I think that gives me the leeway to play suited connectors in the back, etc. But also means I am ditching potential trouble like AJ to a raise. So far it has been working except when I play like a complete bozo post flop.

Only an axpert should play so loose, and im not sure even then. |

Many of the really solid players in my PT database have VP$IPs very close to 20% for NL100 6-max. If you're generally playing against bad LAGs I think that is pretty optimal. If you seek out the weak tables where *you* can be the LAG, then perhaps you can get away with higher.

The deeper the $ goes and the worse my opponents, the higher it gets. |

Commonly stack dependent and opponent dependent. Unlike limit, a huge variation of styles can work in order to beat the game. So long you know what you're doing and you postflop play is sound, you wouldn't go far wrong as long as long as your VPIP is between 15 to 45.
