Default Was this a horrible play by me?

5/10 cent Prima NL $5 buy-in (Huge stakes I know ).

Id only sat down about 5 hands before this one came up and had no real read on the player involved. I was down to about $4.10 and the villain had $10.

Villain is directly to my right UTG making me UTG +1.
He raises 40c (4 x bb) and I just call with AKo. One other person calls after me.

Flop comes A Q x rainbow, villain bets slightly more than the pot ($1.50). I had a strong feeling he could have AQ here, if he had QQ I dont think he would bet out so strongly on the flop but if he had AJ, KK or JJ (assuming he only raises good hands from ep) then I was ahead. So I ignored that gut feeling about AQ and pushed. The other guy folded and the villain called.

Turn and river were blanks and he won with AQ.

So what should I have done differently? Should I have re-raised preflop with AKo? How was the push on the flop? My reasoning was that I was likey only behind to AQ, If I just called his flop bet I would only have a little over $2 left so I may as well just push it all in there.

Opinions?
