Where to safeguard cash in Vegas?

Ok, sort of a simple question for everyone. Going to Vegas in a month, and I'm worried about where to squirrel away my bankroll when in town. I've heard not to trust the room safes? Is this true? I don't want to hide it amongst a pile of clothes, that just doesn't seem sensical. I certainly don't want to walk around with 3k on me. So what gives? Do you guys trust the room safes or what? I've heard that travelers checks are a real hassle too. I'm staying at the MGM.
