Against an unknown, I take the free card. Against a lot of players I bet because they will check/call their set of tens on the flop and check/raise the turn (which they will not be able to do as I will check the turn behind if I miss). A lot of the time, a bet gets hands that are technically ahead (AQ/AK) to fold and, if I get checkraised as the OP did, I have no problem calling the push (and I almost always make a note of what they had when they took this line-- sometimes you get really lucky and they have KdQd).
