What if it's a limit game? They just play out the rest of the hand with Player A's cards sitting there on the muck?

The rule varies by Casino. At some your hand is dead once it touches the muck. At others if your cards can be easily distinguished (which in your case they will be) they allow your hand to be live.

A good practice is to wait till the dealer pushes you the pot before mucking your hand.
