Your read did not indicate that.

Against an average/crappy, non-tricky player that completes in the SB and then checks the flop you should be betting a lot of the time. This is one of the ways that position is profitable. This seems pretty obvious to me.

Also, you're not betting "into" him. Which is sort of the whole point.
