The ultimate goal of a tournament?

My friend and i have had a debate about what the ultimate goal of a tournament is. He says that the ultimate goal of a tournament is to accumulate chips. I say that the ultimate goal of a tournament is survival. In a normal tournament with a normal payout and bubble which style has the higher expected value or is it somewhere in between?
