Default Wireless Network Setup

Quick background. Comcast installed internet through a USB port rather than ethernet port (problem?). We bought a D-Link router and tried to set it up. We hooked the ethernet cable from modem to router and then another from router to computer. We get a light on the LAN 1 for the router but no internet. Another problem possibly is that the IP address and Default Gateway addresses are different. Can we just change the default gateway or is that a bad idea?

Also, we have another computer where the IP and Default are the same, but the network card does not seem to be working because there is no light on the router when we hook ethernet cable to it. This is on my new Dell laptop by the way. Is there a simple way to turn on the network card?

Thanks
