Two questions for computer/internet experts

1) I need to load up my computer with stronger hardware. Specifically, i need PT to run faster and I need to make sure my screen doesn't lag the poker software to the point that the screen only unfreezes once i've been folded from a time-out. Please can one of you experts tell me what i need to add to my computer to make this stuff run better.

This is what i currently have:

Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.20 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM

2) Is there any way to ensure a stable internet connection? I run off of a cable modem that first goes through a router before reaching my machine. I have little delays all the time and these are not only frustrating, but often quite costly. Is there any way to back up this connection and make sure that it will be secure?

I've tried calling my internet company, but most of the people who i've spoken to seem to know less about the internet or computers than i do. So, i'd really appreciate if you knowledgeable people could help me out here.
