It's only going to get worse. This is especially true with China starting to thirst for oil.
I suggest you take a look at this website http://smalley.rice.edu/ And watch the video titled "Columbia University - "Our Energy Challenge" in the center of the page. It is the only solution to our problem IMO. The solution could be paid for with a 5 cent gas tax. On a related note, I also suggest you take a look at this: http://www.iter.org/ Which is supposed to produced 500MW of fossil free power in it's experimental form. However, it has been stuck in politics for the last 20 years and my contacts still don't think US politicians (and others) are serious about the project. This is a website that has a historical record of deadline after deadline which has failed to of been met due to political gridlock. http://fire.pppl.gov/ Energy is expensive and the people with the $$$ and power, private and political, don't care enough to act.
