Its called a limp-reraise, he was counting on you to raise and then think to yourself "I have never seen a decent player...etc" so he could get the call. You said it yourself that he was a solid player and limp-reraising is essentially a preflop checkraise which will almost always indicate a strong to monster holding like QQ - AA.
In th future be suspicious of any kind of bet solid/agg. players make in EP, trust me, they are perfectly aware of their position.
