Default Security in Europe

I'm in Europe just now, in Milan, having just come from Paris.

I was last here a year and a half ago, which was, of course, a year and a half closer to 9/11, but security here is much tighter now than it was, obviously in reaction to what happened in London. There was a much greater police presence on the streets in Paris, especially on public transportation, and here on the streets in Milan too.

Taxi driver here yesterday was listening to talk radio and it was about security and similar issues. Also in Paris, the one taxi driver who spoke English with us was listening to a talk show on the same issue. Anecdotal, to be sure, but seems like the London bombings have hit closer to home here.
