Im fairly new to Holdem. Can someone explain what poker programs are?

Hi I've been playing on Pokerstars for about 6 months. I've had a little success, but not much. I see everyone talking about Holdem Programs. What exactly do they do? An explanation would be appreciated. I don't know if its something that tells you what to do while you play, or if its something else. Thanks.
