MGM or NY-NY for hotel room?

I have a business trip planned for Vegas during the last week of July and I am debating on places to stay. I am hoping to do most of my playing at the MGM and possibly Excalibur. I was going to just reserve a room at the MGM but I keep reading about how far it is to get from the rooms to the casino. Would I be happier staying at NY-NY and walking across the street? I have not stayed at either and would appreciate some suggestions from the folks here.

I have stayed at the Trop and would prefer not to go back. While I enjoyed the Excal poker room, I'm not so sure I want to stay there. Although I hear the pool is nice at MGM I don't know how much of this pale Oregon skin will want to spend outside in the July sun, so it isn't so much of a consideration.

Any input is welcome. Feel free to suggest other places as well, but I would like to stay near that corner.
