Brilliant strategy. It's obvious that communication was the cornerstone in this one. If you're unable to talk to your girlfriend about stuff, why is she your girlfriend? That should be one of the benefits to having a girlfriend. Not saying to be cruel in how you approach her with it, but you should be able to say something.

I wouldn't say it worked. She'd likely have done this no matter how you guys broke up. The fact she is single has much more to do with it than you ignoring her. Watch when she gets into another relationship. She'll likley revert back. Unless she was just depressed a little from dating you. Which could be an extension of how you described how you kept yourself. It can build on each other.
