Poker table cloths (ridiculous newb seeking advice)

Hi. I'm just getting into poker now (been playing semi regualarly for around 6 months) and want to get a big sheet of velveteen to make a table cloth to take to the different places I can get a game going. I don't think its useful for me to build a table at this time (though I'd love to, it'd just collect dust I think) so I think a tale cloth should do nicely. I was wondering

1) if anyone knows what is the actual material used in card rooms or what would be best for what I want it for (something that is flexible enough to go places get spilled on and washed, etc) and

2) if anyone has done this. If so, how does it work? Do you have a drawstring on it? Do you put something under it?

I'd just like a bit better atmosphere for the games.
