Figureing out the table, a leak in my game.

It seems to me that I call off too many of my chips trying to figure out the players at the table. I.E. I have never seen these guys/gals befor and I don't know who are the fish, the rocks, the good players, and etc. without experimentation. Is there an less expensive way to go about this? Whats your strategy?
