I think I understand the point you are trying to make.

I am actually a recovered compulsive gambler, though the biological circumstances leading to compulsive gambling have been corrected, so I do not feel in danger. While I have blown a decent bankroll by stepping up too early, I had the good sense to step down before I went broke. I also avoid the "rake" imposed by pit games, bad sports betting, and trophy girlfriends.

I admit that had I worse luck, it is possible that I could have gone broke. Anything is possible. But I know I beat the game, and therefore it is far from inevitable.
