There is no one specific optimal strategy. The strats change on game rules, decks in play and so on. Go to www.wizardofodds.com and check out the various cards there.

That would be known as a basic strategy card. If you get the correct one for the game structure (see above post), it'll tell you the best strategy to take to minimize your
-EV situation. Some casinos sell them in gift shops, others don't. Some would prefer you know less and take more -EV, some are just generally more relaxed, and some thinks they'll help keep you in the game longer making it more +EV for them to let you use them. |

i'm not a blackjack player by any means, but i think your edge is roughly -2% per hand, depending on the structure. card counters with the basic hi/lo method and no fancy stuff can get that up to 2%, and with tricks in the bag, well, they can do some interesting things (read Bringing Down the House or Busting Vegas by Ben Mezrich, fun reads)

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not play blackjack online. Most - if not all - programs are programmed to cheat you. This is not speculation on my part. I have statistically analyzed log files and proven conclusively that you do not get a fair deal. Most likely way of cheating is for dealer to "try again" when he gets a card that would bust him. I can't be any more specific because I am not privy to the source code or their providers. But I am a very good blackjack player. I play basic strategy perfectly - and I do know how to modify according to the rules offered. I am also a reasonably proficient number cruncher, able to figure the number of standard deviations away from the expected value that a particular set of results was. Please trust me on this. You do not get a fair game of blackjack online. (Maybe there are some fair and some not, but definitely some - and I strongly think most - will not deal a fair game).

And BTW, if this seems a strange place for my first post, don't let that affect its credibility. I've been "lurking" for days, and learning a great deal about limit hold 'em! I ama so-so player who wants to become a very good player. I'm sure I've found the right place! This post about blackjack is my contribution to the greater good of the members. I know what I'm talking about on this one. (Not like when I try to convince friends and co-workers that I'm an expert hold 'em player, lol).

And lastly, yes this chart is correct basic strategy for many (probably most)games you will find nowadays: 4+ decks, doubling after splitting allowed, re-splitting allowed, soft doubling allowed, and dealer stands on soft 17.

Links? Data? Where were you playing? There are some online casinos (a small minority) that are well documented to be cheating, and there are others that are certified honest by well-known international auditing firms.
casinomeister.com and wizardofodds.com both have lists of honest and dishonest casinos. I would be very surprised if you could show that, say, Starluck is not dealing an honest game. |
