Funny Sight at Binion\'s: How Do You Handle These Guys?
I was in Vegas last month and saw something pretty funny:
I showed up early to play in a tourney and sat in on a 2/4 game for a while. There was a player sitting across the table from me who looked like this: Bigger guy, sports jersey (no problem with that) on top of a long sleeve, big chain, beard, WWF style sunglasses (it's 9:30am inside), hat. up to this point nothing outside of the regular schmuck look. But this is the great part. In front of him was a stack on $100 bills reaching just over the pad. They weren't crisp or tightly stacked, but there was a significant amount of money there. If that wasn't weird enough, on top of these bills was a huge prescription bottle filled with pills (I couldn't see what they were). Every time someone raised a pot he stared them down as if they had smacked his mom. When he wasn't in he stared straight ahead with the most stern/angry poker face I have seen The only thing that detracted from just finding this guy amusing and getting a few laughs was the fact that he was being very harsh to a drunk guy throwing his chips away. This guy had obviously been up all night drinking, and had a drink going already. He was being friendly enough, very talkative and a little annoying with the occasional loud profane comment. But he was literally tossing chips in and announcing statements like "I know you have be beat, but I have a feeling here". He even told a few people that he had a mid pair during the hand! So pill-boy gets mad because he played a 56o on a raised pot and chased to pull a straight on the river. I left to go play the tourney (would have made more if I stayed put). I came back after and both players were gone. I asked a lady who was still there what happened and she said the drunk guy got kicked out for foul language. How can you get people like pill-boy to chill out and let people who would love to give their money away have a good time and stay? If you can have any mental image of pill-boy like I do I hope you can get a good laugh. [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] |

Get this guy and all the guys for the "2/4 staredown" thread at the same table. Then maybe they'll see how retarted they all look.
meh, the room will probably just implode. |

I swear, I think that guy was there when I was in Binion's last month. He had his back to me (he was playing the NL game at the next table), so I I don't know if he was wearing sunglasses, but he was a big dude with a giant prescription bottle in front of him (which is why I remember him).

I usually just start f'in with pillboy. I was playing in a 3-6 Kill about two months ago and this young hot shot comes and sits down and takes a couple hits from this old lady. He then starts talking [censored] to the old lady! I was like WTF? That could be your grandma dude! So I felt really bad for the old lady so I started doing 'my thing' with this guy. The monkey was two to my right and the guy in between us even got in on the action a little doing his thing. We squashed this kid, he left soon there afterwards. The old lady stayed and continued to see every flop

Here's an idea, just let him have fun. He's enjoying his fantasy of being a big time poker player, ha ha, so what. Who cares if he looks silly. Poker is silly. The culture around it glorifies cultivated silliness: Scotty Nguyen, the Devilfish, Jesus Ferguson, and many other players look and act ridiculous. Let this man join in too.

There isn't that much you can do here to change pill boy's attitude. He's obviously a certified nutjob. On the other hand, if drunk is having a good time socializing at the table, he won't really mind getting berated as much. Try to have a good time with drunk man. However, if you think that doing this is worth more than a dime an hour, you are wrong.
My approach here is to always try and have a good time. Also, I like to see other people have a good time. I might even compliment them a little "first you outplay me, and now you are outdrawing me? How can I beat you?" If I can afford the stakes, I am almost always having a good time in a loose game like that. I once lost 43BB in a somewhat short (5 hours or less probably) session of 2/4, and I was still very friendly to everyone, even tipping the dealer as I left. |
