Default question about checking flop

I'm sorry if this post might be too vague. My question is, let's assume two situations: 1) you raise the pf utg and 2) you open raise on button. Also assume both situations are 3 handed. Under what conditions do you check the flop? Example is top set w/ no draws, what are some situations where you missed the flop and choose not to bet.

Are we first? Who's behind us? Are they Aggresive? Whats my image? Assuming I'm first, or maybe between a c/c and one of the blinds, I'm betting everytime here. If I flop quads, i'm betting (unless my opponents are extremely unaware).

This really depends on what I'm raising with. If the flop missed me completely, but it looks like it hit me I might check to represent a strong hand, and then bluff bet if checked to on the turn (the checking can be aggressive line). If it hit me hard, and looks like it hit me hard, I mix it up. Sometimes bet, sometimes don't. If it hit me hard, and looks like it didn't, i'm betting every time.

People expect the PFR to bet, and to attentive opponents a check is a lot scarier then a bet, in most circumstances.
