Question about rules of poker
playing the other day on party poker heads-up, i bet the flop and got reraised, then I let most of my time run down and said "argh. ive got AK"... then reraised all-in with AA.
the player called me a cheater and every other name in the book because i lied to him about what cards i was holding. are you not allowed to do that? |

Re: Question about rules of poker
I don't think it is cheating. I don't think it is unethical or angle-shooting either. If it was than you would be lying with your body language every time you conciously try and act one way to hide the strength or weakness of you hand. Every single poker player does this.

The player was a chump if he actually believed you.

Seriously though, that guy is a douche. Lying about what you have is part of the game. |

Re: Question about rules of poker
If he believed you, he deserved to lose.
"I’m gonna go all-in cuz I don’t think you got the spades." |

Good anecdote
A couple weeks ago I was in LA playing the Winnin' O the Green tourney at the Bike. A hand came up where a visibly inexperienced player bet big on the turn when a flushcard hit. His opponent was coffeehousing and asked him "Do you have the flush?"
The new guy turned to the dealer and says dead seriously, "Do I have to tell him?" |

Re: Question about rules of poker
some rulebooks state that if your declared hand value causes an opponent to muck and then you don't have it, that the pot can be awarded to the mucker. usually that would only come into play on the river after all bets were made.
it's bad form. however, if someone were questioning you in the middle of a hand, lie all you want. that's not bad form: it's just poker. matt |

Re: Good anecdote
when I play Live, I tend to take the opposite approach to lying about my hand.
I like to come right out and tell the truth. For instance, on a J, 6, 8 board with 2 hearts someone bets and I go all in announcing "Got trips and need to scare out the flush draw." got called by top pair who thought I was lying and trying to steal the pot. Now, granted, that is an extreme example, but there have been several hands where I've blatently announced my hand and receive action because someone didn't believe me. Honesty sometimes is the best policy. |

Re: Question about rules of poker
I've always thought of doing something like this if me and villian were very deep stacked.
Say its a $400nl game and we've got got like $1,000. Villian raises standard to $16 preflop and I'm to act with AA, and then instead of raising to $50, I raise to $500 and then start going bezerk in the chat box saying like "[censored] [censored] MISCLICK!!!" "[censored] [censored] [censored] me [censored] i accidentally put in another zero, [censored] party poker" etc.... Anyways, how you played it is fine, and also somewhat comical. |

In English Cardrooms......
If you discuss what you have (true or not) you forfeit the pot..
I doubt the site you played at has that rule.... |
