No contributions should be solicited except for food & beverage. I would consider it bad form.

If the host wants to improve the environment associated with his home game, then it is his decision to get new chips, table, or whatever. If players don't like the environment that is offered by the host, then they find a new game.

Just because players would enjoy playing on a nice table with nice chips doesn't mean they should help buy the host a new table, chips, or anything else. Also, the "community" or "group" ownership of something like chips or a table is a recipe for disaster and hard feelings IMO.

We play pretty much exclusivly at my friend Paul's house. He always pays for food and drinks and he owns the chips. When he mentioned he wanted a new table, as a group we decided to take a small rake ($1 for every $20, $3 max per hand) to go towards the table. Wasn't legal, but as a group we decided it was best for the game.

I agree with most of these guys too. My funds paid for a table I made, with another one being built soon. I wanted nicer cards and chips so I bought them. I provide a couple bags of munchies and some ice for those that want to bring their own beer. Last tourney's winner only has to bring pop. We all pony up a couple bucks towards subs or pizza. A couple guys even offered to front a little more to cover the extras but I didn't feel right taking it.

Someone said, somewhere, that if you had a love for classic cars and spent a bunch of money to refurbish one, would you charge your friends gas money to take them for a drive in it? Poker is your passion. It is just the cost that comes with hosting.

Alpha,

I'm one of the most frugal people you will ever meet. But, I have a passion for nice stuff. When it comes to poker I spare no expense to enjoy the experience. In the past year I moved our monthly poker group from cash (with quarters!) to chips. I then asked for KEM Arrows for a birthday present but refused to use them until I had a table with cloth. Finally, I found Junell's table and built myself one. In the past year I've spent $600 on poker gear. I have also had 4 extra events where I covered most of the food. All this costs money that I'll probably never win back but it goes to quality of life and friends.

Remember, I'm cheap, I mean frugal! But I'd still never ask or accept any money for my gear unless someone intentionally messed it up.

PS. Yes, I was stupid and didn't know any better and bought dice chips! OMG!! And I paid top dollar for them. $200 for 650 of them in Vegas. It's killing me seeing them for $10 + shipping. I really need the Pharaoh's!!

If you get to keep your 1/10th of the table go for it.

I've had members my game offer to chip in for some of the permenants costs (tables, chips, etc.) just because they're friends and really like the game I present, but in the end the stuff is mine and there's no debate about that.

I could see a scenario where maybe everyone chips in as some sort of loan so the host in question doesn't take a big hit all at once, but even that is probably too complicated unless y'all are really good friends with him.

I'd resist.

Is it really rude to charge gas money to your friends for taking them a spin in your car?
