Holding Your Cards

At a recent game at Commerce, the fellow sitting next to me would continue to hold his cards when he stayed in a hand -- palm down, in his fingertips, so that they were covered by his hand and difficult to see -- rather than placing them on the table and protecting them. Often I could not tell wheather he had folded or not, since he sat with his hand in the exact same position over the felt after he had mucked.

He was an old cantankerous guy, and when I asked him politely if he wouldn't mind putting his cards down so that I could see when he was in a hand, he sort of spazzed out and got all offended. The dealer explained my point to him, the guy put his cards down for the next hand, but then went right back to holding them after that. I just let it go, because I wasn't sure if he was allowed to do this or not.

Had I called a floorman over, would he have been forced to place his cards down on the felt? His holding the cards was causing people -- including myself -- to act out of turn, though I don't think this guy was savvy enough to be doing that on purpose.

Calling the floor isn't going to do anything but piss people off. I would point it out to him when people acted out of turn due to it. I think eventually he would get the point.

I figured as much, but the guy was being a dick (I asked him very nicely and he got pissed off), and I didn't mind being a dick back. But the more mature side of me, combined with the possibility that the floor would rule in his favor, made me decide to just let it go.

It was clear that he was now committed to holding his cards for the rest of the night as an act of defiance against me. So this wouldn't work. The options were call the floor or live with it. But I'm mainly curious if calling the floor would even have worked. That is, are you allowed to hold your cards or not?

I just try not to get the floor involved whenever I can avoid it. It pisses people off which will almsot always make the game worse. I also don't particularly enjoy playing poker with a buch of angry people.

As far as what the ruling would be, I'm sure they'd tell him to put his cards down but I don't know that there's a whole lot they can do. I doubt there's any rule against holding your cards in the air, its just a dumb thing to do.

I have seen some grabby SOBs at the poker table, one guy called people assholes out loud and even cussed when HE WON! The dufus got aces cracked and steamed out and said 'F___ THE BONUS.' This guy was at least 65... His wife and dog die that afternoon and he goes to play poker?
