Bowl games 12/30
Tempted to take T-Tech +11.
Cal playing in Holiday Bowl is a let-down and they really did look pretty lousy at Southern Miss. Can Red Raiders keep it close?? 4 of Cal's 5 wins before the USM game were blow-outs against mostly crappy opposition: at AZ 38-0, vs ASU 27-0, at WASH 42-12, vs Stan 41-6. The scores look impressive....but ASU was the only decent opponent in there and I'm honestly not convinced they were THAT decent. AZ and WASH are just awful....and Stanford is just a rung or two above awful. Am I the only one who thinks the PAC-10 is overrated? UCLA is unspectacular and lost to freaking Wyoming. Oregon St looked against Notre Dame though (if that means anything). Insight appreciated on this one. I already have NIU +2 vs. Troy. Although the more I look at Troy the less confident I am in this bet. I'm already a whopping 1-3 picking the MAC bowl games. won with UC over Marshall. Lost with BG over Memphis, Iowa St over Miami and UConn over Toledo. NM finished the season 5-0....but they were all fairly close and pretty low scoring games so giving Navy 3 points might have value. Both teams like to run the ball quite a bit so I certainly don't see a blow-out in this one either way. NM defense ranks 8th nationally against the run...and Navy is the 3rd most productive rushing team (using the option). I had to look up the fact that the Emerald Bowl is in SF. I'm strongly leaning towards Navy +3 on this one. NC at 6-5 didn't impress me a whole lot but all 5 of their losses were to decent bowl teams (Louisville, FSU, Utah, Va-Tech, Virginia). BC won 4 straight before getting blown out by Syracuse (who just fired their coach). They had a 1 point win over ND, beat rutgers and a mediocre WV team and beat up on a lousy Temple squad. I might be tempted to take NC just for the home-field advantage here as well as their stronger schedule...but I don't really have a very good handle on this game. |

Re: Bowl games 12/30
Interesting analysis. At least he's with me regarding an NIU win.
Troy's early season performances against strong competition impressed me. Winning their last 4 games against Sun Belt Conf competition and finishing 5-2 in that conference does NOT impress me. Overall...I just think the MAC is a better conference than the Sun Belt. North Texas won the Sun Belt...and they looked like they didn't even belong on the same field as Southern Miss in the New Orleans Bowl. Thus, I'm going with the MAC on this one. It's the first year Fresno State is not competing in the Silicon Valley Bowl. how many fans are really going to show up in Central Calif to watch Northern Illinois play Troy, Alabama? My hunch is that they will have the lowest attendance of any bowl this year. I'm guessing this is NOT the premier matchup the Silicon Valley Bowl was hoping for. |

Re: Bowl games 12/30
Anyway....to summarize...
I officially have 1 unit each on NIU +2 NC -1.5 Navy +3 Haven't bet on the T-Tech vs. Cal game but the more I think about it the more I am willing to take a chance on the Red Raiders in this one. |

Re: Bowl games 12/30
Any thoughts on why the line is so heavy on BC??
Golden Eagles have gone from +1.5 to -1 in the past few hours for what is essentially a home game for NC. Evidently BC's top QB is going to play but they are uncertain how effective he is going to be. |

T-Tech vs. Cal... Wow how fake was the last 3 minutes or so? Looks like the game was fixed to be over.

I was asleep at halftime, long day at the B&M - what happened?? (Besides the fact that the over got crushed)

Re: Bowl games 12/30
I missed the end also...but looking at the box-score doesn't show anything out of the ordinary.
I hardly think there was any "fix" regarding the point-total. TT led 38-17 at end of 3 Q's. 14:06 left in 4th Q. Cal scores to make it 38-24. Drive, 10 plays, 65 yds. Scoring play was 11 yd pass. 2:32 left. TT scores to make it 45-24. Drive, 12 plays, 74 yds. Scoring play was 1 yd run 0:43 left. CAL scores to make it 45-31. 11 plays, 77 yds. Scoring play was 1 yd run. Score by Quarter TT 7 7 14 7 = 45 CAL 14 0 3 14 = 31 |
