Pet stores keep them in little cups because it is expensive to house them properly and so that customers are more likely to buy them on impulse. Customers take the poor things home thinking they can thrive in that little cup and wonder why their beloved fishy always looks sick and dies within 3-6 months. A properly cared for Betta in a properly sized home can easily live 3-5 years. Same deal with goldfish and other types of fish who are incorrectly perceived as pets with short lifespans. |
