Nummerfire posted this at a Danish pokersite (www.pokernet.dk - for those who read danish )and I think it's worth exploring here:
Let's assume a typical to semithight midlimit game (Party players can assume a Party 15/30). You get two brodway cards in LP/CO/Button, raise and get HU against the big blind who's unknown to you. The flop is all undercards, you bet and BB calls, the turn is another undercard with no improvement. BB checks, what now? How often do you bet/check? What if you have an Ace? How does your turn action influence your river action? I know this is a very mundane situation, but it's also a spot where a lot of money is won/lost. I'm not asking for personal advice, but looking to start a discussion, so don't ask questions about the games I usually play but tell how you approach these situations in general or in your regular game. |

I'm firing until the BB makes me stop with any two cards here, because that's what position is for. That's why you raised from the Button in the first place in this semitight game. (That's why I love the Stop n Go on the turn when I'm in the BB against a suspected steal.)

In a standard game with no reads, yes. Alot of BB defenders will pay to see the turn but not the river, Button vs Passive Blinds is just about Auto-Bet to the river for me these days. And if they pull a Tommy and call down to the river with a better hand, then we both learned a good lesson for the rest of the session. Even being outed as a thief isn't all that bad as an advertising play if you can adjust your play afterwards. People start calling you down from the blinds with any piece of the board.

Sometimes when you get your hand caught in the cookie jar you cut and run, and sometimes you make a spite 3 bet just because spite rules.

Actually, that's what check-raises are for.
I'm losing a lot of money in this spot. BBs are check-raising the turn alot, especially on semi-coordinated boards, and I will sometimes three-bet the turn then check-behind with AK unimproved against very aggressive players. I'm facing a turn check-raise from aggressive players while holding overcards on 8-high and 9 high boards, and these decisions are really causing a lot of grief. |
