3x bb always has been the "standard" preflop open raise for many players.
I find that I get too many callers w/ 3x. I'm talking about hands that would just as soon take the blinds as see a flop or face an all in reraise. AQ,AJ,88-JJ, etc... How much is everyone else's "standard" raise? |

Hi Soss,
I've been kind of feeling my way around this issue myself. I pretty much consider 3xBB my minimum standard raise, now. Early stages with loose players, I'm liable to go 4 or even 5xBB, but I play it by ear. If I see someone come in for 3xBB and get 3 callers, and I draw AJ the next hand, I will probably come in for 5xBB. I think that as the blind level increases (and the field narrows), a 3xBB standard raise produces the desired results. Early stages (ie., looser players) require either a larger standard raise or a fold (or maybe a call is justified in some instances). It all ends up back at the *feel* thing. Texture of the table, blah blah blah. Oh yeah...I just found out my wife's been cheating on me, so I';m a little drunk right noew. Don't listen to me if you can help it. --Casey |

Not in my world. I just don't feel it's worth risking 4x to win 1.5x. If I raise 3x with AK or a decent pair, and they call me with mediocre hands like AT, KJ, or 44, so be it. I expect to win more than I lose postflop anyway, and even more so when I start with the best hand.
In fact, I like to raise somewhat less than 3x. For example, when the blinds are 50,100 on Pokerstars, I usually raise to 280. It works just as well as 300, and saves me 20 when it doesn't work out so well. Later, Greg Raymer (FossilMan) |

Greg,
What do you think about raising 2x in early position, and then escalating that to 3x as you get closer to the button. Also only raising 2x as the small blind when Blind v Blind? Thanks Spoody |

I don't like 2x. It does not seem to work anywhere near as often as 2.5x or more, at least if your goal is to get a fold preflop.

I usually make it 4x the BB up through 25-50, then 3.5x for the 50-100 level and then 3x from there on out. Reasoning being that I want to make the implied odds for calling me with speculative hands that much worse early on. I was playing a .50/1 NL table and someone was raising 2.70 as their 'standard' raise. What is funny about this is that is puts a lot of 'chips' on the table and if someone is not paying attention (i.e. playing multiple tables, watching TV, etc) it looks like a big raise and someone may bullett fold before they realize that it was in fact less than $3. Not that I ever did that. No no. Not me. |

Hi All,
A bit of fun mathematical chicanery: Assume: a + b = c Therefore: (4a - 3a) + (4b - 3b) = (4c - 3c) 4a + 4b - 4c = 3a + 3b - 3c 4(a + b - c) = 3(a + b - c) ... cancel common factors ... and ... 4 = 3 So ... there's no difference between a 3xBB open-raise and a 4xBB open raise. Cris |
