Need some Direction
A few weeks ago I decided to find out what else their is to Poker(HE to be
exact), other than a rank of hands. I would have never thought that HE required so much..thought! I have been reading posts from almost a hand full of forums and here as well. Recently I picked up a hold'em book, "The Complete Book of Hold'em Poker -Gary Carson" to be exact. I realize this wasn't the best first Poker book, but it was the best choice I had, I think. (Other choices were Killer Poker Online, Super Systems, and Play like the Pros) I plan on ordering these books next, but I don't know if they would be my best choice: Lee Jones- Winning Low Limit Hold'em David Sklansky - Hold'em Poker David Sklansky - Theory of Poker And then David Sklansky - Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players Doyle Brunson - Super Systems I am 18 and live in Nova Scotia, Canada and am also interested in trying a little online poker, just small limit games. Being in Canada can I still get a NETeller account, and if so how would it affect my account? I was considering joining www.partypoker.com as it looks like a good place for a beginner to get his feet wet, perhaps someone has a better recommendation. Sorry for the Lengthy Post |

Re: Need some Direction
Robnaldo,
Your booklist is pretty good, though you probably don't need Super System if you are mainly interested in limit games. If you ever want to try no limit or no limit tournaments, then Super System is also a good choice. Carson's book may not be good for a beginner. Reviews of other books are at: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...mp;o=&vc=1 PartyPoker is ok. You may want to try several sites and just play for play money or very low stakes at first to see how you like them. Ultimate Bet has ultra-low limit games ($.01/.02) that can help you get comfortable. On the other hand, Truepoker has a unique interface (3D animated avitars). Pokerstars has lots of tournaments. The GamingClub has multiple freeroll tournaments a day. And on and on.... If you have multiple accounts, you can take advantage of deposit bonuses and other promotions that are offered periodically. Neteller works well for me. I don't know about Canadian accounts, but I'm sure they'll let you know.... Best of luck! |

Re: Need some Direction
Where can I get these books at a decent price.
I went to amazon.com and it would cost me 44.89 US and 58 Canadian just to order HE and WLLHE to Canada. (Canada doesn't qualify for Amazon Super saving, so shipping is 8.97) I went to www.bestwebbuys.com but it seems most of the cheaper sites only ship to the US. |

Re: Need some Direction
Try one of the large bookstore chains. Do you have Borders or Barnes & Noble in Canada? Most 2+2 books are now in the larger bookstores.

Since NETeller is based in Canada, I don't think being Canadian would hurt you. |

Re: Need some Direction
Lucky me, I found out amazon has a Canadian site too.
And the Canadian site has Super Saving Shipping for orders over $39 CDN. The books HE/WLLHE come to a total of $42.80 as opposed to the $58.37 I thought I was looking at. |

Re: Need some Direction
Try http://www.anybook4less.com/ seems like many times the best price is at Overstock, which says it has "World Wide Shipping"

Re: Need some Direction
Neteller works fine in Canada. It just automatically converts your Can$ to US$ (and back again when you cash out). You will need to play with US$ on all the online poker sites that I know of, but that is ok.
Chapters does have all those books you mentioned, but you will have to order them. I think Sklansky's books are about a two week wait. I get almost all my books from Chapters. The list you gave for books to buy is excellent. The Lee Jones book should probably be your next purchase. 'Theory of Poker' is also important but will not seem like the gem it is right away. get it though. If you intend to play No Limit, SuperSystem is a good buy. One of your best resources is going to be the internet. Look around and you will find a lot of great information, but be careful to sift through the garbage. This site is excellent for the most part, and it is usually pretty easy to tell who's advice should be taken with a grain of salt. Partypoker is my favorite site to play at, and I think the best place for a beginner to start - lots of bad players (so don't take advice from any of them). I would also recommend the Gaming Club because I think they have a no-purchase bonus just for signing up (you get $15 to play without spending a dime of your own money). They also have free tournaments everyday that you can win money from. Regards, Brad S |
