Inspired by a high school assignment, Stephanie Haaser leaped onto a cafeteria table, shouted "End homophobia now!" and kissed classmate Katherine Pecore.

Haaser and Pecore were suspended for two days.

"It's highly inappropriate to stand on a table in the cafeteria and make out, whether the kiss was heterosexual or homosexual," said River Hill High School principal Scott Pfeifer. "I don't think there's a school in the country where parents would consider that appropriate behavior."

I don't know what world the principal is living in, but there's no way most schools would suspend a male-female couple for kissing in school, be it on a table-top or no.

some times its good to do things against the rules to challenge the system or raise awareness. this may be one of them. but when you do you must be prepared to pay the piper even if the sanctions are unfair as well.
that said-

standing on a lunch table is taboo anywhere and should be in bad form and punished. and what are high school girls doing wearing all that makeup anyways. am i old fashioned or what? and why should making out in school be okay.
i am liberal on these things generally but it looks to me clarkmeister fell off a cliff and landed on his head. better play poker and profit today before he regains his composure

As to your makeup point, I just moved to Southern California a few months ago. One of the first days I was here, I was driving in Chatsworth just as Chatsworth High was being let out. It looked to me more like a procession of pornstars than high school students.

Aside from the questionable nature of the assignment, does anybody see the irony in being ordered to conform to the teacher and the class by committing a nonconformist act? I think I would have declined to do the assignment as my non-conformist act, thus both doing the assignment and not doing the assignment at the same time. I then would have asked the teacher about the ability of the assignmet to be both done and undone at the same time, an interesting philosophical proposition. I was always a smart ass in school tho. Teachers usually couldn't go deeper than a question or two before they became frustrated and gave up.[img]/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]


The more things I see about schools, the more dangerous I think they are. I am not a fan of homeschooling in many ways, but if we have kids I will think baout keeping them out of the clutches of schools. Schools are pretty abusive, waste a lot of time, and ruin a lot of kids. I think the way we educate children probably needs to completely change. You just see so much stupid stuff go on in schools that are run by abject morons, like the principal in this example.
