Default Clarification needed in Carson\'s Book

I just came across this advice in Carson's Hold 'Em Poker:
[ QUOTE ]
"...say you're on the big blind with a hand like 9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], and no one raised before the flop. The flop is Q [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]...You should probably bet."

[/ QUOTE ]
He then goes on to explain that you can't count on someone having a Queen and how you must avoid giving a free card. I have a couple of problems with this advice, but first I'd like to hear you guys' input.

That's an excellent spot to bet. Maybe not 100% of the time, but you should definitely bet there with some regularity.

You'll find the same advice i HEPFAP. You bet because you might have the best hand and win it right there. If you check the last player to act will often bet regardles of his holdings, so you have no idea where you stand. If it get's chekked around and a T falls on the turn, then what do you do?

The point is that if you plan to play this hand betting out is better than calling!

ok. I bet out. Then what?
If raised, do I auto-muck?
If called, do I fire again on the turn?
So much to learn

Speck,

You took your stab at it on the flop.
If someone raises fold.

On the turn unless your hand gets helped, check fold.

"If someone raises fold"

No, that would be awful with 5 almost certainly clean outs.

You might even prefer to see a raise, the better to drive out other players.
