Anything that gets his stack in the middle is good. But note that many free cards will hurt you, so betting out might be better on the turn.

did he buy in short or did his stack dwindle down?
i noramlly dont give any respect to guys in the pot who buy in short, just becasue thy tend to pick a hand, and decide they want to double up with it no matter what. very often its only top pair, or any pocket pair and theyre praying for a miracle. so like those guys said, get it in on the turn |

Short stacks don't deserve respect. They're nearly all awful players or people taking a shot. I'd need serious persuading before I didn't take one to the felt with a strong overpair.
