Default OOT May Have Saved My Life And The Lives Of My Family Last Night!

Yesterday, My wife, me, and our two children were driving home to Wimberley, TX from a funeral in Amarillo, TX (about 550 miles). We got a late start so the last 200 miles or so was in the dark. About 10:30 we were on a little two lane road that runs between Luckenbach and Blanco. The road was empty and I was in a hurry so like a dumb ass, I was speeding up to 80 - 85 on the straight parts.... About half way through a straight, a deer jumps out into the road about 100 yards a head of us. I figured the deer would keep running and be off the road in plenty of time so didn't hit the breaks right away but I did let off the gas. When I realized the deer had stoped in our lane and didn't appear to be going anywhere, I was within 25 yards of it and doing about 70. Normally, I would have reacted naturally by slamming on the brakes and swerving to miss the deer. At 70, this would have been catastrophic. I would have almost certainly lost control, gone off the narrow road, and ended up flipping God knows how many times.

But, as I realized the deer wasn't moving, I recalled a recent thread on OOT that discussed the best thing to do when faced with this kind of situation. I kept the wheel straight, and pressed the breaks, but not hard enough to go into a skid. I hit the deer dead center at about 65 miles per hour.

I drive a suburban with a big ass Ranch Hand grill guard on the front of it so while Bambi was scattered all over the road (I turned around to look...sick bastard!) the suburban came out un-scathed. I'm sure in a smaller car, this would have been an ugly accident. I am also sure that had I not read that post, I would have over reacted and had a horrible accident...

Thanks OOT!

Mars

LMFAO! Actually, the kids were sleeping and stayed that way through the entire thing. I wouldn't have turned back if they had been awake.
